Chuck Colson is Dead...

Image
Public Domain, White House Photo Chuck Colson, controversial Water Gate figure and evangelical lightning rod is dead.  He died today of a brain ailment.  It is sad.  For many reasons.  Although he claimed to have converted to Christianity right after he was thrown in jail for his involvement with Richard Nixon, I'm not sure if he truly converted.  A few years before his death, Colson performed two very devious actions that tarnished his conversion---in my opinion.  First, he was one of the five 'evangelical leaders' that sent a letter to George Bush for going to war with Iraq.  In the so called "Land Letter"  he justified the preemptive strike against Iraq where thousands of lives were lost and millions of souls affected.  And second, when ever he spoke about legalizing immigration he always vilified the immigrants.  A true Christian would have never done any of those two things.  Perhaps that is why it took him a long time to go right after surgery...He d

Why Good Friday?

Image
"The Kiss of Judas" by Gustave Dore, Public Domain Why do Christians celebrate Good Friday? And what are the implications of today? First of all, many people who do not believe in Christ or Christianity have a hard time accepting that God would willingly sacrifice his son to save the world. Jesus Christ was crucified under the charge of blasphemy because he equated himself on par with God. And unfortunately even today, it is the ultra religious zealots that are willing to kill anyone who in their view perform sacriligeous acts. So the world has not changed much since the day of Christ. As a matter of fact it is probably worse. Why so much violence by seemingly pious people? What drives their hate? Or who do they think they get their authority to threatened or kill people who oppose their views? Would God even care about an insignificant human trying to defend Him? Of course not. It does not make sense. Jesus Christ was crucified regardless of what you might have heard or lea

Trayvon Martin: American Son

Image
Anupam Kamal, Feb. 2010. Public Domain It was terrible to hear about the death of Trayvon Martin. A young teenager shot dead for issues that are still been cleared. Nonetheless, there has been a massive uproar. Thousands have don hoodies to protest what they perceive to be a racist death. As terrible as his death has been it is just as alarming that people are very quick to jump into judgement. The media was the number one instigator. As soon as it was revealed that a white man had killed a black teenager who only had Skittles and ice tea, everyone was quick to judge. No one bothered to slow down a bit to assess the situation. As of this writing it is becoming clearer that Treyvon had a sketchy pass. He had been suspended a couple of times from school, his father was living with his girlfriend at the time of his death, and his Twitter account left much to be desired. Where were his parents? The fact that his father had a live in girlfriend says a lot. That is not normal for any youn
